Day Care For Your Dog

Doggie boarding isn’t just for over night. Dogs need to exercise, and doggie boredom leads to destructive behaviors such as chewing, licking, digging, or barking which will not endear you to your neighbors. As people head off to work with their briefcases, they often choose to leave their dog at a doggie day care that provides their canine customers with a fun, friendly, action-packed alternative to lonely days at home. Sometimes a doggie day care is just the thing to give pup parents a break in their busy schedule! Dog day cares provide clean, safe indoor and outdoor play areas and a full range of services such as bathing, grooming, walking, playing fetch and even swimming. Just like daycare centers for children, doggie day cares stress that every day is filled with stimulation, interaction, and play, as well as nap and quiet time, in a clean, healthy, fun and nurturing environment. Many day cares even provide a live video cam so owners can watch their dogs!

Just like a kid taking his backpack to school, your doggie will have to take a few things with him. Many facilities require a quick release dog collar. Take his treats and food, because it’s best to stay on the diet he is accustomed to. Take his favorite dog toy or stuffed animal, and you might bring his dog bed so he has a familiar place to curl up.

Heads up though, leaving your dog at one of the doggie day camps may not be as simple as just making a reservation and packing his bag. Because the dogs are allowed to play together, facilities often limit breed types, such as pit bulls, and they may ask you to bring your dog in for an interview. Typically, your dog will be introduced to a couple of other dogs to see how well he plays with a group. If all goes well, your dog may be asked to stay for a few hours so that they can monitor his play patterns. It isn't unusual for a kennel to charge for this evaluation.

For dog owners, whose pet is not yet well socialized, this may seem a difficult hurdle to overcome. After all, how can he become better socialized if he isn’t around other dogs? Not to worry though. There are facilities that offer your dog the opportunity to become socialized by slowly introducing him to a few dogs of like size and temperament, and if he is not yet ready to play with the pack, he can still go on walks and play fetch with a human.

Many facilities offer while-boarded obedience training programs for pooches of all ages. Class may include classes such as Puppy Kindergarden, Basic Manners 1, Basic Manners 2, and Canine Good Citizen. Just make sure the training centers on positive training techniques.
